Nebraska Sex Offender Registration Act

  Beginning Jan 1,1997 all persons who plead guilty to or are found guilty of any listed sex offense(s) or are on probation, parole, or incarcerated for any of the listed offenses are required to register with the county sheriff where they reside within five (5) working days of becoming subject to the act.

  The requirement also includes any person who moves to Nebraska and has plead guilty to or been found guilty of any equivalent offense in another jurisdiction outside of Nebraska.

 

Purpose of Sex Offender Registration

  • Assist in the investigation of sex crimes.
  • Prevent future sex offenses.
  • Track potentially dangerous sex offenders.

 

How to Register

.

  • Report to the Sheriff's Office of your county of residence within five (5) working days of becoming subject to the registration act.
  • Provide all necessary documents and information to the Sheriff's Office for the Registry.
  • Keep Sheriff's Office informed of all changes of address even when moving out-of-state.
  • Register with the new Sheriff's Office or state of residence within five (5) working days.
 

Who must register

.

 

Adults and juveniles convicted of the following crimes within the parameters of the Sex Offender Registration Act:

Non-parental Kidnapping of a Minor
 
  1. False Imprisonment of a Minor
  2. Sexual Assault
  3. Sexual Assault of a Child
  4. Sexual Assault of a Vulnerable Adult
  5. Incest of a Minor
  6. Pandering of a Minor
  7. Visual Depiction of Sexually Explicit Conduct of a Child
  8. Conspiracy to commit the above crimes
  9. An Attempt to commit the above crimes

 

Information obtained for registration

  The following information is obtained by the registering law enforcement agency:

  1. Identification Data
  2. Complete Address History
  3. Vehicle Information
  4. Employment Status
  5. Incarceration(s) and Criminal History
  6. Fingerprints and Photograph
  7. Mental Health Treatment History

Penalties

  Failure to comply with the Nebraska Sex Offender Registration Act will result in a:

  • Class IV FELONY

               If a person fails to:

  • register within five (5) working days of becoming subject to the act;
  • notify officials of an address change within five (5) working days;
  • verify their address within ten (10) working days; or
  • provide false information to the registry; and the original crime was a misdemeanor.
