The Investigations Division is headed by Lieutenant Rick Spencer.  He is assisted by Investigator Mike Cotant.

  Investigator Cotant is also responsible for the registration of all sex offenders in the Sheriff's Office area of jurisdiction (Statute # 29-4002)  In addition, Mr. Cotant serves as the Regional Coordinator for Region # 1 (panhandle counties) of the Nebraska Law Enforcement Intelligence Network (NeLEIN.)

  For informational purposes, there are 66 sex offenders, 21 parolees and 433 probationers living in Scotts Bluff County during the month of June.

 

The division is responsible for conducting criminal investigations ranging from fraud to homicide.  They assist the Patrol Division and other agencies upon request.

 

 

 

STATISTICS

                

During the month of August, Investigators were assigned a total of (7) follow-up investigations. (2) were subsequently forwarded to the office of the County Attorney for determination of prosecution, (3) were "administratively closed" while (2) cases remain open.

Total open cases (FY) to date = 27 (or 14 [YTD] cases per Investigator).

During the month of August, seven (7) reports were referred to the Investigation Division. Four (4) cases were crimes against property, one (1) crimes against persons, one (1) death and one (1) suspicious circumstance .

The personnel within our Criminal Division spent the majority of their time with administrative details (128.95 hours), Meeting/Committee Activity (33.05 hours), Burglary/Theft (31.20 hours) and All other Activity (18.00 hours).

Regarding criminal activity, Criminal/All other (3.25 hours), and Forgery/Fraud (2.50 hours). 

Investigators responded to (1) crime scene and conducted (0) search warrants and/or consents to search.  Investigators made 119 personal contacts for the month.

Total loss due to burglary/theft June 2007 =  $25,24848.15

Total loss due to burglary/theft July 2008 =  $19,877

(21.23% decrease)

Total recovery from burglary/theft June 2007 = $0

Total recovery from burglary/theft June 2008 = $7,500

 

 

MAJOR CASES:            

 

 

  On August 8, RICHARD ZITTERKOPF reported the theft of several tools from his residence located northwest of Minatare. Zitterkopf advised that he had left the tools in the residence the evening of August 7 and discovered them missing upon returning to the residence August 8. The power tools were valued at about $782. No suspects were named.

On August 25, TERRY WOZNICK reported the theft of a hand power tools from a construction trailer left at a job site east of Lyman. Woznick advised that entrance into the trailer was gained by cutting the padlock on the door. Woznick valued the tools at about $4,925. No suspects were named.
