Handy Services: Handyman & Handy Bus

The Scotts Bluff County Handyman program serves as a go-between, matching persons with the ability to do housework and yard work with requests for minor repairs in carpentry and plumbing from elderly homeowners.
The services include the following:

1. Housekeeping; which includes routine housework such as dusting, vacuuming, scrubbing and waxing floors and other cleaning necessary for household maintenance. Also includes seasonal housework such as washing walls, cleaning of cupboards.
2. Seasonal home maintenance, which includes lawn mowing and snow removal.
3. Minor home repairs, which includes fixing leaky faucets, fixing broken hinges or locks on cupboard doors and replacing broken doorknobs.
4. Safety modifications, which includes installing ramps for wheelchairs, repairing or replacing broken steps, installing hand rails and grab bars.
The program will also loan wheelchairs, walkers, canes & crutches to those who are eligible. Anyone over age 60 is eligible to receive the services. At the end of each month a list of all services performed is sent to your home along with a request for a contribution to help support the program. The amount of requested contribution is based on a percentage of your gross yearly income. For more information or to sign up for the program call 436-6688.

The goals of the Scotts Bluff County Handy Bus program are to increase access for people to meals, health care, shopping, education, employment, public services and recreation.

Scotts Bluff County Handy Bus Public Transportation Service

Buses are available to Scotts Bluff County residents from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Reservations should be made 24 hours in advance by calling the office between those hours. Buses DO NOT run on the following holidays:

Who is Eligible?
Anyone over 60 years is eligible for these services.

Who are the Handyman people?
They are Independent contractors who are signed up to perform services for the program. The program gives them the freedom to work when they choose or at your convenience.

How is the program funded?
The program is funded through the State Dept. on Aging. Title XX funds and contributions from clients.

How do I signup?
By calling the Scotts Bluff County Handyman/Handy Bus Office at 436-6688. A representative will call on you requesting basic information, and explain the program.

What about big jobs?
We're sorry, we can't. We lack funds needed to do roofing, paint entire homes and heavy work.

How soon will the Handyman be out?

Handypersons will call you and arrange a convenient time to come out.

Can I have the same person again?
Yes, normally we assign the same person unless you request someone else.

How do I contribute?
The Handyman Program will send you a notice at the end of each month which will list all services performed for you that month along with a request for a contribution to help support the program.

Where will the Handy Bus go and when?
The Scotts Bluff County Handy Bus serves the entire County from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, except Holidays, from its base of operation at the County Administration Building in Gering.

Who can ride the Handy Bus?

The Handy Bus Service if open to the General Public, anyone is eligible to ride.

How much does it cost per one way trip?

  • $1.00 in Scottsbluff/Gering area
  • $1.50 from Mitchell, Minatare & Melbeta to Scottsbluff/Gering area
  • $2.00 from Henry, Lyman & Morrill to Scottsbluff/Gering area.

When do I need to call?
Reservation should be made a day in advance by calling 436-6687. The dispatcher will need your name and address as well as trip purpose and destination, if you have more than one destination the dispatcher will also need to know that. A dispatcher is on duty from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays. The program currently operates 5 to 6 vehicles per day, averaging approximately 30,000 boarding each year and 120,000 miles.

  • Recreational trips, trips to hair dressers, etc.
